Decreased Aircraft Takeoff Performance under Global Warming

With global warming, extreme high temperatures become more frequent and are an important factor affecting aircrafts’ takeoff performance. Using Community Earth System Model version 1 (CESM1) Boeing Performance Software (BPS), the influence of increasing temperature on maximum weight (MTOW) distance is evaluated quantitatively in this study. The results show that distribution summer daily shifts obviously to higher at all chosen airports variation larger four (Jinan, Shanghai, Lhasa, Urumqi) during 2071−2080 under RCP8.5 scenario than historical run (1991−2000). warming air leads MTOW reducing increasing. Taking 737–800 aircraft as illustration, number weight-restriction days increases significantly across airports, which can airlines’ economic benefit flight operations future. It also found does not change linearly with temperature, but shows a stronger increase temperature. about 6.2% average compared 1991−2000 for low-altitude calling additional 113−222 m future summers.
